What do ferrets eat?

Ferrets are obligate carnivores; their diet must contain a high percentage of animal protein. Many people’s ferrets are fed on a diet of carcass meat (chicks, rabbit, etc.). Whilst these foods are relished by the ferrets, they do lack certain nutrients that are essential for good health and as meat is soft and can be lodged between teeth there is a risk of dental problems. There are some excellent complete ferret foods available to buy and they are in the form of a dried biscuit. A good ferret food should be high in animal protein and oils. Cat foods (and especially dog foods) are unsuitable to be fed as a staple diet as they do not contain enough animal protein or fat.
